St. Croix Educational Complex High School (ScEcHS), under the dedicated guidance of art educator Ms. Danica David, has achieved an extraordinary milestone by winning the Congressional Art Competition for the third consecutive year. This remarkable accomplishment reflects the passion, creativity, and hard work of the young artists, supported by a strong network of encouragement and mentorship.

This year’s competition highlighted three outstanding student artists whose works beautifully represent the rich cultural heritage and artistic excellence of the Virgin Islands:

  • First Place: Contemplation by Henson Barley Jr., from St. Croix Educational Complex High School

  • Second Place: Island Vibe by Riyanna M. Sutton, from St. Croix Educational Complex High School

  • Third Place: Lady in Madras by Ava Daniel, from Ivanna Eudora Kean High School

The school community is exceptionally proud of all the students and the impressive talent they continue to display. A special shout-out is also extended to Ms.David's students, Marley Cassius, Venessia Burgos, and Jayla John for their participation and creative efforts, which added depth and vibrancy to this year’s showcasing of young artistic talent.

In mid-June, Ms. Danica David had the honor of traveling to Washington, D.C., as a chaperone for the first-place winner, Henson Barley Jr. The trip included attendance at the Congressional Art Competition tour, luncheon, and awards ceremony, providing an inspiring and memorable experience. It was a significant opportunity to celebrate Henson’s artistic talents and to connect with other young artists and leaders from across the country.

Gratitude is expressed to the Honorable Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett, her dedicated staff, and the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts for their generous support, which made the trip possible for both Henson and Ms. David. Their continued commitment to supporting the arts and empowering young artists in the Virgin Islands is deeply appreciated.

Finally, thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Barley for entrusting Ms. David with the privilege of serving as Henson’s chaperone, an experience she will always cherish.

Congratulations are extended to all the talented young artists who participated in this year’s competition. Their creativity and dedication continue to inspire the entire community, with much anticipation for their future achievements in the arts.
