On January 26, 2026, as part of its 30th anniversary, St. Croix Educational Complex High School welcomed alumni, students, faculty, and staff for Barra Day 2026. The event commemorated three decades of excellence at SCECHS and recognized the continuing “Barra Strong” spirit that unites the school community.
The event integrated art, tradition, and community engagement. A central feature was a collaborative artwork created by SCECHS art educators Mr. Dwydale Dariah, Ms. Danica David, and Mr. Shakir Smith. Commissioned by the 30th Anniversary Committee, this piece honors the Barra family’s pride, resilience, and unity. Alumni were invited to sign the artwork, transforming it into a living record that connects generations of Barras through shared memories and commitment.
The large wooden artwork was displayed on a historic easel that once belonged to the late painter Maria Henle, daughter of renowned photographer Fritz Henle, who relocated to St. Croix in the mid-20th century. Maria Henle was recognized for her artistic insight and significant contributions to the Virgin Islands' cultural heritage. The easel was donated by her sister, Tina Henle, a distinguished photographer who continues the Henle family’s artistic legacy.

Maria Henle operated the former Maria Henle Studio at 55 Company Street in Christiansted until her passing. Her sister, Tina, managed the studio for many years. Currently, the studio space is occupied by FantaSea Jewelry, where artist Nicole Gariepy continues the creative tradition and exhibits works from the Henle family’s collection. The presence of Maria Henle’s easel at Barra Day 2026 fostered intergenerational connection, illustrating how art and education together preserve and inspire the school’s legacy.
The St. Croix Educational Complex community expresses deep gratitude for this significant gift. Dariah, David, and Smith remodeled the easel to accommodate the artwork and painted it royal blue to reflect the school’s colors.
Barra Day 2026 was more than a celebration; it was a tribute to 30 years of pride, unity, and achievement. The SCECHS community continues to build upon a strong foundation of creativity, integrity, and shared purpose, sustaining the enduring Barra Strong spirit.
